Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple


The City Madurai and the temple are more than 3600 years old. Till the 14th century A.D. Madurai was the permanent capital of Pandia Kings. Though commenced by the Pandia king Kulasekara Pandian, the temple was completed during the reign of the Nayakkar King from the 16th to 18th century A.D. In the 7th century A.D. the Praharam including the Swami Sannadhi alone were existing as per Thirugnana Sambandar's poems. It was only during the 12th century, A.D. that the Pandia king Sadaiyavarman Kulasekara Pandian built a Sannidhi for the goddess Meenakshi. The works of the temple were in progress from the 12th century to the 18th century A.D.
