It is situated at a distance of about 3 k. east from Meenakshi Amman temple on the way to Ramanathapuram from Madurai. The Mariamman temple is situated in the North East of this famous tank. The goddess Mariamman of this temple is worshipped as a powerful deity.
This is the place where the king Thirumalai Naicker digged the soil to fabricate the bricks required for building his palace. The pit that was thus formed is seen as tank now. It is approximately 305 M long and 290 M wide, nearly equal area to that of Meenakshi Amman Temple. Built in 1645 A.D.,this is the biggest tank in Tamil Nadu.
In the centre of the tank there is a Madapam called Maiya Mandapam (Central Mandapam). It is very beautiful. During Thai Poosam festival it will be decorated with colourful electric lightings. During the birth day of king Thirumalai(Thai Poosam day )the deities Meenakshi and Sundareswarar will be placed on a float and pulled around the Maiya Mandapam in the water of the tank. The festival is celebrated every year .
