There is a place called "thamukkam" in the Tallakulam area of Madurai. Several recreational fights and sports were conducted here. "Thamukkam" means the palace with a gallery for seeing the sports and hence it is called Thamukkam. This was built is 1700 A.D. by the Queen Mangamma. It is said that sports with the elephants were conducted here. This palace was also used as the summer palace of the Queen Mangamma.
During the rule of the British, a portion of this palace was renovated and expanded. Again in 1955 to 59 this was renovated. It is functioning as Gandhi Memorial from 15-04-1959. The floor of the building has been expanded and a library is functioning.
